Fans of “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” the #1-rated drama series on television, revel in the characters’ high-tech gadgets and out-of-the-box thinking to solve cases. CSI: Crime Scene Investigation/The Soundtrack (Hip-O Records), to be released September 24, 2002, just prior to the debut of the CBS series’ third season on September 26, displays the same adventurousness--a rare quality in music featured on a TV series. Not often, for instance, does a TV soundtrack album debut a new song from a new album by a major rock artist, but featured on CSI: Crime Scene Investigation/The Soundtrack is The Wallflowers’ “Everybody Out Of The Water” from Red Letter Days. Also featured is Universal Records’ newest star, up from the British techno underground, art punk-gone-vibey Clinic (“Come Into Our Room” from 2002’s Walking With Thee). The compilation also boasts two classics, The Who’s 1978 rocker, “Who Are You,” which is the theme song that opens each episode, and The Chambers Brothers’ 1968 anthem, “Time Has Come Today.” The distinguishing factor that separates CSI: Crime Scene Investigation/The Soundtrack from other TV soundtracks is the cutting-edge nature of the additional tracks and their artists. Techno, trance and tribal are words rarely used to describe TV music. Two of the best-known artists on the album are New Order, one of the most influential and acclaimed of electronica artists, with “Crystal,” from 2001’s Get Ready, and Robbie Robertson, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer from The Band, whose Native American-goes-techno track, “Unbound,” was culled from his 1998 solo album, Contact From The Underworld Of Red Boy.
